Elsewhere, plenty of eyes will be on Brooks Koepka, who makes his return to The Players Championships for the first time since 2022 after redefection from LIV Golf. The 2015 winner Rickie Fowler has started the season in solid form and could be another bolter.

What is so special about the 17th at TPC Sawgrass?

One of the most picturesque holes in golf, the 17th features the tee, the green and a bucketload of water in between.

It’s a par three, with the tee shot over a lake (no ‘fairway’ here) to an island green almost entirely surrounded by water.

For the pros, it’s not technically that hard a shot, but they’ve got to stick it on the green and the sound of oohs from the gallery as a ball trickles inexorably into the drink is one of the finest sounds in golf.
